How to Choose a Blood Pressure Monitor
Walk into any pharmacy or open any shopping site and you'll find dozens of blood pressure monitors that all look broadly the same. The differences that actually matter are easy to miss. This guide sorts the meaningful features from the marketing, so you can pick a monitor that fits your arm, suits your eyes, and gives readings you can trust.
Start with validation, not price
The single most important thing about a monitor is whether an independent registry has confirmed it measures accurately. Anyone can print "clinically accurate" on a box.
- validatebp.org is the US Validated Device Listing, run by the American Medical Association. This is the primary US badge to look for.
- STRIDE BP is a global list from the European, International, and World Hypertension societies. Some models appear here but not on the US list.

Choose upper-arm over wrist for most people
An upper-arm cuff monitor is the type most heart-health authorities favor for home use, and it's what the major registries mostly validate. Wrist monitors can be accurate when used perfectly, but they're far more sensitive to arm and wrist position, so they're easier to get wrong. Get the cuff size right
A cuff that's too small or too large is one of the biggest causes of inaccurate home readings. Before buying:

- Check the monitor's cuff range in centimeters. Many wide-range cuffs cover roughly 22 to 42 cm.

What if two people in the house will share it?
Look for a monitor with multi-user profiles, which keeps each person's readings separate on the device. If it only stores one user, readings from both people can get mixed together in the memory.
Should I buy the newest model each year?
